Little Miss Sunshine

I know I said that I would watch a new movie, but I didn’t really have time to do that yet. I did watch Little Miss Sunshine again this weekend. Throughout this movie, there are several instances in which love is shown. Although this love may vary from passion to familial love, the idea of love is a connecting factor. In the movie, Frank, played by Steve Carrel, is heartbroken over the loss of his love to another colleague. From this breakup and other factors, Frank tries to take his own life. This love Frank had reminded me a lot of Catullus and his love of Lesbia. Catullus is completely in love with her and is, in many instances, unable to cope with their breakup. The movie also shows familial love. Even though Cheryl and Richard have a rocky relationship, they figure out that they both have the family as the first priority. Catullus refers to a familial and protective love when he describes the relationship of a father and son. Richard figures out that this complex relationship is more than just financially protecting his family. It encompasses protection and emotional stability. Even though Catullus's poetry has many different ideas about love, it is a universal human emotion that is relatable to everybody.

Introduction

This blog is set up to discuss the theme of love in Catullus' poems and how love is portrayed in current movies. I would like to focus on the different types of love Catullus describes such as passion or familial love. I will basically watch a new movie every month and write about the relationship of the characters in the movie and how they relate to Catullus' ideas of love. I look forward to reading your opinions!
